Dead [Women] Poets Society [Not] in London

We're back, and this time, we're everywhere!

Join us for an evening of resurrecting dead women poets online. This time we'll be hosting two fabulous (living) poets: Bridget Minamore and Nina Mingya Powles. They will be communing with twentieth century US poets Margaret Walker and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. The main event will be accompanied as ever by our popular Dead  [Women] Poets Society Open-Mic, for which we welcome poets and  performers of all and no genders to the (virtual) stage! Our only rule:  for every poem of your own, you should also read/perform one by a dead  woman or non-binary poet. When you get your ticket, just indicate that  you want to sign up and we will confirm whether you have a spot or not  by Sunday 18 July.

Normally, tickets to our events are £5, but we know online events  aren't quite the same. So we're offering £1 tickets, but the option is  there if you're able and would like to pay £5 - it'd help us keep doing  what we're doing. And if the £1 is really a barrier, select a £1 ticket  and use the code London Concession at checkout for a free ticket. We're also offering our merch as optional add-ons, just as if you were at a stall in the interval leafing through our wares!

More about the poets:

Bridget Minamore is a poet, editor, dramaturg, journalist and essayist from and based in south-east London. She was shortlisted to be London’s first Young Poet Laureate, and in 2017 she became the youngest person, and first woman, to be the lead tutor for the Roundhouse Poetry Collective. She was one of Speaking Volumes' 40 Stars of Black British Literature in 2015, and is a co-founder of Critics of Colour with playwright Sabrina Mahfouz, a collective for UK-based people of colour which aims to making writing about theatre, dance, and/or opera  more accessible. Titanic (Out-Spoken Press), her debut pamphlet of poems on modern love and loss, came out in May 2016. She will be 'resurrecting' Margaret Walker, the first Black woman in the United States to win a national writing prize for her debut poetry collection For My People in 1942. Nina Mingya Powles is a writer and zinemaker from Aotearoa New Zealand, currently based in London. She holds an MA in Creative Writing (Distinction) from Victoria University of Wellington. In 2018, Nina was one of three winners of the  Women Poets' Prize, and in 2019 won the inaugural Nan Shepherd Prize for  Nature Writing and the Landfall Essay Competition. Nina is the founding editor of Bitter Melon苦瓜, a very small press that publishes limited-edition pamphlets by Asian poets. ​Her debut collection Magnolia 木蘭  was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection in 2020. In response to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's life and works, Nina made a zine. This multidisciplinary form seemed perfectly fitting for Cha's own artistic interests, which spanned photography, visual art, film and all forms of writing. Discover her zine after Cha here.
